Placemaking - Street Signs
At the Historic Central Area Arts and Cultural District (HCAACD) the purposeful mission captured in the organizational pillars outlines its priorities that includes strengthening physical identity and sense of place to preserve the African American legacy given the complexities and evolution of the Central Area. Grounded in pride and committed to sharing the historic legacy of the Central Area, coupled with solid vision, is the demonstrated course of action at HCAACD Placemaking. Working with community, liaisons at Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), and Office of Economic Development (OED) the roll out for a series of cultural identifiers along the 23rd Avenue and Martin Luther King, Jr Way corridors is underway.. In partnership with Kibbie Monie and Nu Black Arts West we are happy that on September 21, 2020, the Seattle City Council approved an honorary street name that pays tribute to a Seattle advocate for theater arts, founder of Black Arts/West, and public historian, Douglas Q. Barnett. Douglas Q. Barnett street is at 34th to 35th Avenues on E Union, the historic site of Black Arts/West Theater. For more information about Black Arts/West and Douglas Q. Barnett click here.
